Many would have been surprised coming across Gandalf on his trip in New Zealand. After ruling the world of wizardry, Gandalf the white may have decided to retire and spend some time traveling the land of the Kiwis.
The photographer, Akhil Suhas, did manage to create this impression when he decided to put on Gandalf’s costume and take epic pictures during his trip and 6-month’s stay in New Zealand.
Suhas called his almost 9,000-mile adventure as #GandalfTheGuide and he documented it via epic photos.
“I wanted a recurring subject in my photos and with so many photographers visiting the country, I figured that I needed to do something to set me apart!” he said. “I was watching the LOTR for the 5th time when I figured New Zealand is famous for 2 things: its landscapes and the LOTR + Hobbit Trilogies. So why not combine the two by having Gandalf in the landscapes?”
Most of his pictures are of people he met on his journeys who agreed to wear Gandalf’s costume. That way, he could make sure that all photos were taken with the perfection of an expert photographer.
“I tried the camera on a tripod with a timer shot, didn’t work for me,” Suhas said. “So, I started asking the people I met along the way if they wanted to put on the outfit.” Most people agreed, allowing Suhas to create an amazing small-person-big-landscape photograph tour of New Zealand.
We’ve selected some of Suhas’ best pictures which he took during his tour. We hope you’ll enjoy them as much as we did.
