Chris Jones of the Chiefs suggests he will hold out until Week 8.

Chris Jones of the Chiefs suggests he will hold out until Week 8. On social media, defensive stop Chris Jones indicated he will continue his holdout from the Kansas City Chiefs until Week 8. He is ready to forfeit his weekly game check, approximately $1.1 million, because “I can afford it.”

Tuesday, Jones responded to fans in a thread on X, formerly known as Twitter, by posting a photo of a sign that read, “If it’s out of your hands, it deserves freedom from your mind as well.”

It is difficult to determine whether Jones intends to hold out until midseason, is publicly posturing for a new contract, or is simply interacting with fans.

Jones has previously admitted that he occasionally uses social media to solicit feedback and advised not to take every post seriously.

Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs stated on Wednesday that “there has been no communication” with star defensive tackle Chris Jones, so he does not know what will happen with Jones’ holdout.

Meanwhile, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes acknowledged on Wednesday that Jones’ holdout lasted longer than expected.

“I don’t believe anyone expected him to be absent at this time, but it’s part of the contract negotiation process. I am not looking down on him for that reason. He has attempted to complete tasks that he feels compelled to complete immediately. He stated, “I respect his decision.”

When asked if he anticipates beginning the season without Jones, Mahomes expressed optimism that this will not happen.

“Not absolutely. I know contract matters are difficult to discuss because everyone wants to provide for their families, but I also know how much Chris adores the Chiefs. He enjoys being a member of this organization. I remain out of it and reassure Chris that he will be welcomed with open arms whenever he returns and that he is preparing himself to be the dominant player he has always been when he does return.

Mahomes added that he and his teammates have maintained communication with Jones and that “he’s in good spirits.”Jones is liable to a daily fine of $50,000 for missing training camp by the collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the players’ association.

Several defensive tackles have inked massive contract extensions this offseason, including Dexter Lawrence of the New York Giants and Daron Payne of the Washington Commanders, who each signed four-year, $90 million wings. Jeffery Simmons inked a four-year, $94 million contract with the Tennessee Titans, while Quinnen Williams signed a four-year, $96 million contract with the New York Jets.

According to the Roster Management System, Jones’ average annual salary of $20 million now ranks ninth among defensive tackles.

Last season, Jones tied his career high with 15.5 sacks, ranking fourth in the league and first among interior pass-rushers. He was selected to the All-Pro first team for the first time in his career after being named to the All-Pro second team in 2018, 2020, and 2021.
