Andhra Pradesh is a state in Southern India. The capital of Andhra Pradesh is Hyderabad. The state was formed on 1 November 1956 by the merger of the Telugu-speaking regions of the erstwhile Madras Presidency with the Andhra State. On 2 June 2014, the northwest region of Andhra Pradesh was separated to form the new state of Telangana. Hyderabad will remain the joint capital for both states for 10 years.

The name Andhra Pradesh is derived from the Sanskrit word “andhrá” (अन्ध्र) meaning “dark” and “purá” (पुरा) meaning “region”, thus meaning “region of the dark people”.
