R. Kelly sentenced to 30 years in prison in sex trafficking case: Kelly, a disgraced R&B artist who was convicted on all nine counts in a high-profile sex trafficking case, was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Wednesday, months after he was found guilty on all counts in the case.
The decision to impose the punishment was made by U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly in Brooklyn, New York after a number of Kelly’s victims voiced their outrage toward him throughout the hearing.
Donnelly did not hold back any harsh criticism as she hurled the book at the formerly adored performer.
She told him, “You were a person who had a tremendous deal of advantages, including worldwide recognition and renown as well as untold money.” “By holding teenagers captive in your house, you took advantage of the hopes and dreams that they had.” You were at the very top of your organization when you raped and beat them, cut them off from their families, and forced them to perform things that are beyond comprehension.
During the time they were under Kelly’s influence, victims who testified in court stated that they scarcely had any desire to continue living.
A lady who identified herself only as Jane Doe No. 2 claimed that she had been “degraded, humiliated, and had my spirit broken” by her attackers. “Because of how you humiliated me, I wished that I would pass away.”
The victim described an instance in which she had been coerced into engaging in oral sex with Kelly “after you played basketball, in a car full of your pals.”
She scolded Kelly, who was dressed in olive-colored prison scrubs over a white blouse with long sleeves and wore a black mask, and asked, “Do you remember that?!” Kelly was wearing a mask and olive-colored scrubs.
“You couldn’t care less. I tried to avoid thinking about your name and your music because I was terrified of you. Your actions have left an indelible mark on my life that will never be erased.
The victim paused for a second when she noticed Kelly chatting to one of his attorneys and then apologized in a mocking manner, saying, “I’m sorry, I don’t want to disturb your conversation.”
She said, “You have no shame, and you are a filthy abuser.” “I really, really, really wish that you spend the rest of your life behind bars. I’m sorry that this happened to you.
Kelly, who is 55 years old, was found guilty of racketeering and breaking the Mann Act in September. The Mann Act is a law that prohibits moving persons across state boundaries “for any immoral purpose.” Kelly was found guilty of both charges.
In a letter given to Donnelly earlier this month, federal prosecutors requested a sentence of 25 years in prison for the defendant, but the judge handed down a term that was longer.
Jane Doe No. 1, who broke down in tears as she spoke to the judge, related that she had spent years under the delusion that Kelly would never be held accountable.
“I know there are followers of R. Kelly who don’t believe us,” said the woman, who was 17 years old when she first met Kelly at a concert in September 1994. “I know there are fans of R. Kelly who don’t believe us.”
“I had given up hope in our judicial system, but you have given me faith in it once more. It’s a never-ending fight, and I can no longer bear to keep quiet about it. Being subjected to sexual abuse or being sold into prostitution is inhumane. It is slavery in its current form hidden in plain sight.
