Georgia police welcome their newest hire the therapy dog Goose. This week, the Savannah Police Department announced the arrival of the division’s first therapy dog.

Goose, a 10-week-old Labrador puppy who started therapy dog training this week, is the newest member of the SPD.

Chief Lenny Gunther said, “Department members and the community will benefit from this.” Whether it’s a community member going through a traumatic incident or an officer who needs a little cuddle after a tense call, Goose will be there to help.

Goose will respond alongside handler Cpl. Julie Cavanaugh of the Behavioral Health Unit as part of her responsibilities.

A dog taught to comfort and love people besides its owners is called a therapy dog.

Hospitals, schools, nursing homes, disaster zones, and other places where people may be distressed frequently use therapy dogs.

SPD said Goose would be sent if needed to assist and calm the situation that BHU may be handling.

Goose will also be in the department for any situation where a little comfort may be needed, whether that is comforting an officer or a person who witnessed or was a victim in a tragic incident.

“We are so excited to add Goose to the department and see all the ways that he will be helpful to this community,” Assistant Chief Robert Gavin said. Someone suggested giving him the name Goose in honor of Maverick’s co-pilot in the Top Gun movie. It is ideal for what he will be doing in this place. Every day, he will serve as our co-pilot.
