Does Knives Out beat Glass Onion? Fans chose a winner. Knives Out, a murder mystery released on Netflix this year, surprised and delighted viewers and critics alike. Its sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, is doing the same thing. As a result of the first film’s massive success, viewers of the sequel are bound to make comparisons, and they’re quick to pick out which of the two they prefer.
Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), once again called upon to solve a murder mystery, this time travels to a distant island to participate in a murder mystery game organized by tech tycoon Miles Bronson (Edward Norton). After an unexpected death on the island, the audience learns more about each of the “friends” until they realize that nothing is as it seems and that their unbreakable bonds threaten their own lives and the entire globe.

The film, written and directed by Rian Johnson once again, premiered in select theatres in November and was met with positive reviews and enthusiastic audiences. As a result, it was taken out of cinemas shortly after that and made available to streaming service members this past weekend.
Reviews and ratings for Knives Out and Glass Onion have been quite positive, yet audience reactions suggest that one film is superior to the other. An individual on Twitter voiced displeasure with the sequel’s political undertones, framed by the COVID-19 epidemic. This Twitter user also noted that the characters in this sequel were very different from those in the original film, calling them “caricatures of e-celebs” or internet celebrities.
One Twitter user disagreed with this assessment, arguing that Knives Out told a better tale, as it followed Benoit Blanc as he investigated the murder of Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), a wealthy family patriarch, his dysfunctional family, and his medical nurse, Marta Cabrera (Ana De Armas).
While it’s true that the murder element in Glass Onion is somewhat predictable, the film embraces this predictability in a way that seems both humorous and fresh, turning it into something of a sleight of hand.
Ultimately, Knives Out and its sequel successfully revitalized the whodunit genre to the point where they gave rise to a brand new franchise that has yet to make plans to finish with Glass Onion.
