CBN for Sleep: What You Need to Know: Approximately 70% of adults in the United States report that they obtain insufficient sleep at least once a night each month. 11% of adults say that they experience insufficient sleep every night. In general, between 50 and 70 million Americans of all ages are affected by sleep-related problems.
If you are unable to sleep soundly at all, you may be facing a host of potential health problems. These include high blood pressure, obesity, reduced immune system function, diabetes, and a lower sex drive.
A growing number of people in the United States and across the world are turning to CBN oil to improve their quality of sleep. In this blog post, we will highlight everything you need to know about CBN for better sleep. Let’s get started.

What Is CBN?
Cannabinol, better known as CBN, is one of the chemical compounds found in cannabis and hemp plants. In recent years, it has garnered significant attention for its potential health benefits, including improving people’s quality of sleep.
CBN is found in the Cannabis sativa plant, formed as the plant ages and TCH begins to break down. CBN does not contain THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, which means that it does not cause the “high” that people experience from consuming cannabis.
It’s important to note that only a limited amount of research has been conducted on CBN to date, certainly less than CBD. However, the early research does indicate a number of health benefits, including better sleep.

Effects of CBN on Sleep
CBN oil is marketed as a sleep aid miracle, allowing people who experience sleep-related problems to improve their quality of sleep. The reality is that the only scientific research in favor of using CBN for sleep comes from a study conducted in the 1970s.
That study looked at CBN in conjunction with THC, which, as noted above, is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis. Therefore, it may be possible that THC is responsible for the sedative effects.
Anecdotally, however, there is strong reason to believe that CBN is an effective option for people looking to sleep soundly at night. Further studies looking at the link between CBN and sleep will likely better allow us to answer exactly how beneficial it really is.
How Does It Differ From CBD?
There are a number of similarities between CBN and CBD, two cannabinoids that can be isolated from the cannabis plant. For example, they both act on receptors in the endocannabinoid system, which is involved in a wide range of functions in the body. These include regulating pain, immune system functioning, and appetite.
Forms of CBD have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in treating nausea, seizures, loss of appetite, and vomiting in specific situations. However, to date, no products containing CBD have been approved for medical use by the FDA.
The result is that CBD is far better known and easier to find/purchase compared to CBN. However, it is clear that interest in and use of CBN is growing and the product is becoming more mainstream, particularly as a means to improve the quality of sleep.
Other Possible Benefits of CBN
While CBN has not been well-researched to date, a number of studies not related to sleep have noted encouraging effects. One such study from 2019 found that CBN relieved pain in rats. The study concluded that CBN may be effective at soothing pain for people with fibromyalgia and other conditions.
There is also research that indicates CBN is effective at stimulating appetite. People who suffer from conditions such as HIV and cancer may experience improved appetite after taking CBN. Again, this study was carried out on rats.
A study from 2006 found that CBN was effective at reducing the inflammation associated with arthritis in rats. It is known that many cannabinoids contain anti-inflammatory properties.
The bottom line here is that there are a number of potential health benefits of CBN for humans. Further research, particularly in humans, is required to better understand these potential health benefits. 7 Symptoms and Causes of Sleep Apnea
Potential Health Risks of CBN
As with the potential health benefits, not enough is currently known about its potential health risks. There is general research that shows that using cannabis and cannabinoids may contribute to a host of risks. These include:
Paranoia or memory problems
Head rush or dizziness after standing up
Problems for a developing fetus
Cannabis use disorder
Exacerbating pre-existing kidney or liver problems
When considering CBN specifically, there are currently no known side effects. However, this doesn’t mean they do not exist, but rather that there is insufficient research.
Therefore, we recommend that you always consult with a healthcare provider when considering taking any new products, including CBN. Certain people may be at a higher risk than others, including pregnant women.
Sleep Soundly With CBN
There are currently no research-based guidelines for using cannabinol, including CBN, as a sleep aid. However, the limited research performed to date and anecdotal evidence does suggest that there is a link between CBN and improved sleep.
We recommend that you speak to your doctor for a full assessment of your symptoms. There are a number of other effective steps you can take to sleep soundly, including avoiding large meals and alcohol before bedtime and removing electronic devices from your bedroom.
