Cancer kills Zoleka Mandela Nelson Mandela’s granddaughter at 43. Zoleka Mandela, 43 years old when she died of cancer, was the granddaughter of South African anti-apartheid struggle hero Nelson Mandela. Her family announced her passing on Tuesday. “Zoleka passed away…surrounded by friends and family,” Zwelabo Mandela stated after Zoleka’s death. She was Zindzi Mandela’s firstborn child with her first husband, Zwelibanzi Hlongwane. Zindzi Mandela was Nelson Mandela’s youngest daughter.

According to the patient’s family, recent tests showed “significant” cancer progression that had spread to the patient’s hip, liver, lung, pelvis, brain, and spinal cord.
“We mourn the loss of a beloved grandchild of Mum Winnie and Madiba,” the Nelson Mandela Foundation stated on social media, using the term by which the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize was affectionately known. “Madiba” was an acronym for “Nelson Mandela.”
