The official Instagram handle of Mumbai police posted a couple of Bollywood scenes recently. In the photos, the police were trying to take a dig at the misogynist tone. For example, the post had a line from Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani’s movie Kabir Singh which had misogynist dialogues. In one of the scenes, Kabir tells his girlfriend Preeti to check her dupatta as there are other men. In another scene, he tells in a frustrated tone to another man how Preeti is his bandi.
The post by Mumbai Police on Instagram handle read, “Cinema is a reflection of our society. Here are (just) a few (of many) dialogues both our society & cinema need to reflect upon. Choose your words & actions with care – unless you want the law to intervene.”
Filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Kabir Singh became a super hit at the box office but it had drawn a lot of criticism from few sections of the society that didn’t like Kabir Singh’s depiction of a hero who is having so much anger and violence issues. In 2019, if women are still being thought of as “their girl” or a “property” by men then it just doesn’t work for the welfare of women who are trying their level best to stand up against violence and raise their voice against domestic abuse.
Other scenes that were also mentioned on the Instagram handle were a scene from Dabangg when Chulbul Pandey threatens to hit Rajjo when she denies getting the payment of her handmade matkas. Although we are living in the 21st century, we still have such old-fashioned and traditional mindset men and women as well in our society who try to control the young and upcoming women to make their careers and stand on their own feet. Such acts of impulsive, aggressive behaviors need to be managed and controlled for the betterment of society as a whole.
