Today, 5th May 2021, marks the screening of the debut short film of Ranbir Kapoor – Karma. This film has been directed by Abhay Chopra who is the grandson of BR Chopra, a noted filmmaker. Karma will be screened on the youtube channel of the Bandra Film Festival. The duration of this film is only 26 minutes. The category of the film where it will be featured is titled “A Point Across.”
The theme of the movie is capital punishment in India. It revolves around the distress and emotional turbulence of a jailer who has to take a decision on the execution of his own son.
The other stars in the cast are – Milind Joshi, Sharat Saxena, and Sushovan Banerjee.
Commenting on why he chose the theme of capital punishment, Abhay Chopra said that at the time the movie was made it was a very topical theme. The focus of the nation on prime-time debates and discussions was all related to this topic. There were cover stories and opinion polls on this subject during those days. The hanging of Dhananjay Chatterjee accused of the murder and rape of Hetal Parekh was a harsh reality at that time. The film had been inspired by reality although progress as fiction.
The closure of Dhananjay’s case did not see an end to the discussion on capital punishment as it still remains a hot topic of discussion added Abhay Chopra. He goes back to the time when he directed Ranbir Kapoor who was a newbie and had not entered Bollywood. He is all praises for Ranbir’s acting skills. He also went on to praise Sharat Saxena’s acting and was happy that the film will also get screened in the Bandra film festival which is a digital film festival and collaboration between Filmkarvan and youtube.
