Iran had their first corner of the game seven minutes later, but it was missed by everyone and the Americans averted the danger. In the 93rd minute, they also had a free kick from just outside the box, but their header missed to the left.
Iran nearly tied the game as the clock ticked down to the final seconds. Near the net, a ball floated in Turner’s direction and slid right under his legs. Out of desperation, Walker Zimmerman cleared the ball. Iran requested a foul, but none was made. Despite Iran’s offensive resurgence in the second half and numerous scares, the American defense was able to triumph and breathe a sigh of relief.
The USA will play the Netherlands in their Round of 16 matches on Saturday at 10 a.m. ET to determine their place in the knockout round. Iran and Wales from Group B are both eliminated.
There will no longer be any draws; you will either win and advance or lose and leave. And the USMNT will win their first World Cup if they win four more games.
