Biopics are a trend in Bollywood with some being extremely successful while others ranking average to low viewership. Some of the sports biopics from the past to the present are – Azhar, Saina, MS Dhoni the untold story. Mary Kom, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and many others. In the last ten years, a biopic is being planned on the legendary hockey player, Dhyanchand. The initial plans were to cast Shahrukh Khan, and the rights of the biopic were with Karan Johar who had bought them. The film saw huge delays in post-production and could not even be launched. The rights have been currently bought by Ronnie Screwvala and he plans to launch it on a massive scale in 2022. The director of the film is Abhishek Chaubey and he will team up with Supratik Sen to write the screenplay. However, despite Ronnie Screwvala being involved now, the film has still not made any progress.
The main reason and hurdle are now being attributed to the refusal of Varun Dhawan to do the film. The film has no lead actor finalized currently. The reason as revealed by close industry sources is that Ronnie’s production company that was established by him in 2014 – RSVP needed Varun to confirm the dates urgently, which he was unable to do due to prior commitments. The script of the film is said to be fantastic.
The upcoming releases of Varun Dhawan are – Bhediya, Jug Jugg Jeeyo, Sanki, Ekkis among others.
Varun ranks amongst the highest-paid celebrities and he got married to his long-time sweetheart Natasha Dalal earlier this year. Varun enjoys a whopping following of 35.9 Million on his Instagram account. He along with other Bollywood stars is also helping raise funds for the COVID -19 affected.
Now we will have to wait and see who will finally be cast as the legendary Gyanchand?
