What does a Cloud Architect do?: A growing number of individuals and businesses rely on cloud services such as file sharing, monitoring, management, and backups. Who is a Cloud Architect?

In the IT world, a cloud architect is in charge of developing, implementing and managing cloud-based strategies and products for companies of all sizes. In addition, they are in charge of providing for and narrowing the gap between business needs and issues.

Since they often work with and coordinate with other tech teams, software developers, and DevOps engineers, cloud architects are a vital part of the company. However, cloud architecture is a broad concept, so let us define each component of a cloud architect separately.

Basic skills required by a Cloud Architect

To begin a career in cloud computing or as a cloud architect, it is essential to have a computer science background or a related field in information technology, as most organizations consider this a minimum qualification for a candidate.

Apart from minimum qualifications, some organizations would even look for a master’s degree or certification and work experience of more than a year. Below are some of the basic requirements and criteria a hiring manager would look for in a potential candidate for a cloud architect:

    • Knowledge of operating systems like Windows, Linux, etc.
    • Basic understanding of programming languages like Python, Java, etc.
    • Understanding of networking concepts like HTTP, DNS, and IP addresses
    • Must be capable of designing cloud infrastructure while maintaining the data integrity and security of the organization.
    • Must know the various costs of each cloud service to implement and cater to the needs of organizations as per their budget.
    • Must be adept at changes and troubleshooting and carry out cloud strategy effectively.

Job roles and responsibilities of a Cloud Architect

Qualified candidates are required to fulfill the following roles and responsibilities of a cloud architect, but they may change per the organization’s requirements.

This is by no means the complete list of job responsibilities of a cloud architect; there are dozens and dozens more.
